Many adults are unhappy because they have crooked teeth or a bad bite, but they don’t like the idea of getting braces. Metal brackets on teeth are very conspicuous, and many think braces carry a social stigma of something that only kids wear (although 1 out of every 5 patients we treat for orthodontics are adults).
Despite this, correcting those crooked teeth is important, not just from an aesthetic perspective, but also for your oral health.
Having crooked teeth can create difficult areas to clean or pockets where plaque builds up, and this will expedite tooth decay. Having a bad bite (called malocclusion) can also cause pressure areas when you bite that lead to chipped teeth or chronic jaw pain.
But just because you need braces, it doesn’t mean you have to wear bright metal brackets with color bands. There are several options for adults, which we’ll describe below, but the most popular option for adults is Invisalign. We’ll also discuss how Invisalign works and how it helps fix your teeth.
When most people think of braces, they think about traditional metal braces. These are the least expensive option, but they’re also the most noticeable. Metal brackets are placed onto the front of each tooth and then an archwire connects the brackets. Tiny bands hold the archwire to the brackets, and sometimes rubber bands connect the brackets on the top teeth to the bottom teeth. Aside from being noticeable, they are also difficult to clean.
Ceramic braces work in the same way as traditional braces. Brackets are placed on the front of your teeth and are connected by an archwire, but they match the natural color of your teeth. This makes them much less noticeable and are a good option for many adults who aren’t good candidates for Invisalign.
According to the Invisalign website, “Invisalign® straightens your teeth using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable, and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. They gradually and gently shift your teeth into place.”
If you’re a good candidate for Invisalign, we’ll provide you with 18-30 aligner trays. Each tray moves your teeth a little bit farther, and you’ll switch them out every two weeks until the treatment is complete. After a few months or a year, you’ll be amazed at the difference in your teeth.
Invisalign is a great option because there are no brackets cemented to your teeth and no wires. The Invisalign trays are removable, which means you can eat whatever you want or remove them for special occasions. It also means cleaning your teeth is much easier; you don’t have to work around wires and brackets where plaque loves to hide.
Invisalign also reduces the amount of trips you make to the orthodontist. With metal braces, patients typically need to visit the office every six weeks to have their wires tightened. Since the trays only last a couple weeks, if one breaks or gets lost it isn’t the end of the world because you can just skip to your next tray.
And of course, most people love Invisalign because they are barely noticeable, providing the confidence you need to correct your smile.
Is Invisalign right for you?
Although Invisalign has many benefits, it isn’t right for everyone. First, invisalign is not available for children, only teenagers and adults. Second, it can be more expensive than traditional braces, but for many adults, the benefits are worth the cost. Fortunately, many dental insurance plans cover Invisalign the same way they cover regular braces. But of course, you should check with the insurance company first to make sure.
Invisalign also cannot correct the most difficult cases. However, you might be surprised by how many oral issues can be treated and resolved by Invisalign. If you have crooked teeth, an underbite, an overbite, a crossbite, gapped teeth, or overly crowded teeth, then Invisalign can help.
